NS338 alloy has better overall corrosion resistance than other available nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys, including Hastelloy C-276, C4 alloy and 625 alloy. NS338 alloy has excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. It has excellent resistance to aqueous media, including wet chloride, nitric acid or a mixture of oxidizing acids containing chloride ions. Also, NS338 alloy has ideal resistance to reducing and oxidizing environments encountered during the process. NS338 alloy is exceptionally resistant to a variety of chemical environments, including strong oxidizing substances such as ferric chloride, copper chloride, chlorine, hot contaminated solutions (organic and inorganic), formic acid, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, seawater and salt solutions.

Corrosion resistance of NS338: NS338 alloy is suitable for use in a variety of chemical process industries containing oxidizing and reducing media. The high molybdenum and chromium content makes the alloy resistant to chloride ions, and the tungsten element further enhances its corrosion resistance. NS338 is one of only a few materials that are resistant to moist chlorine, hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide solutions, and the alloy is significantly resistant to high concentrations of chloride salts (e.g. ferric chloride and copper chloride). NS338 alloy is used in a wide range of applications in the chemical and petrochemical industry, for example in components and catalytic systems that come into contact with organic substances containing chlorides. The material is particularly suitable for use in high temperature, inorganic and organic acids (e.g. formic and acetic acid) mixed with impurities, and in corrosive environments in seawater.
